Flow Never Lies: Why Surfing, Foiling, and Riding Put You in the Zone
Carles CarreraShare
We’ve all felt it. That rare moment when everything around you fades away, time slows down, and your mind stops spinning. There are no distractions, no doubts, and no overthinking. Just movement. Just now.
This is what I personally crave for.
That is what psychologists call a flow state, and it might be one of the most powerful mental tools we have.
In watersports like surfing or foiling, flow is not just a bonus. It is built into the experience. Because the truth is, when you’re riding a wave or flying above the water on a foil, the moment you start thinking about anything else — a text message, an email, something someone said — you lose balance. You fall. You’re out of the moment.
And that’s exactly why we keep coming back to it.
What Is a Flow State, Really?
The term “flow” was introduced by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, who spent decades studying peak human performance. According to his research, a flow state is a psychological condition where you are completely immersed in what you’re doing. You are fully engaged, highly focused, and lose track of time and self-conscious thought.
It’s not just a feeling. It’s a measurable state. Brain activity changes. Certain areas of the brain actually go quiet, a phenomenon called transient hypofrontality. This is what allows your inner critic to shut up. At the same time, neurotransmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine increase, boosting mood, focus, and reaction time.

This state isn’t reserved for elite athletes or Zen monks. Anyone can experience flow: in sports, music, art, coding, or even doing dishes. But it is especially accessible when the activity:
- Requires your full attention
- Involves a balance between challenge and skill
- Provides immediate feedback
- Has clear goals and no distractions
Sound familiar? That’s surfing. That’s foiling. That’s riding a motorcycle through twisty mountain roads. That’s being fully alive.
Why Watersports Are Made for Flow
Most of us are bombarded by distractions all day. Phones, messages, notifications, tasks. Even when we’re “off,” we’re not really off. Our brains are in standby mode, waiting to react to the next interruption.
Watersports strip all of that away.
The ocean does not wait. The wave is coming whether you’re ready or not. You can’t pause, rewind, or hit snooze. The moment demands all of you. And because of that, you enter that flow state more easily.
Especially with foiling, the demands are even higher. A foil board reacts quickly, and subtle shifts in weight and balance can make the difference between a clean glide and a nose dive. You’re not just balancing on water: you’re flying above it, harnessing raw energy that has traveled across the planet.
You don’t have time to overthink. You just react. Instinctively. Presently. Fully.

Foiling and the Pursuit of Longer Flow
What makes foiling different from traditional surfing is how long you can stay in flow. On a surfboard, you might get a 10-second ride. On a foil, a single wave can connect you to minutes of uninterrupted glide. One good section leads into the next, and before you know it, you’re carving clean lines a kilometer down the coast.
In the video below, Carlos Manich shows exactly what that looks like — foiling endless waves in Peru with a calm, deliberate presence that perfectly reflects the Slow Life is the Real Life philosophy.
Under his feet? RSPro’s Cork Traction pads. Made from cork bark that grows slowly, sustainably, and naturally. They’re light, grippy, and eco-friendly — and they happen to match the flow mindset perfectly.
We didn’t design them to be flashy. We designed them to work. To disappear under your feet so you can focus on the ride. Because when you’re in flow, less is more.

The Personal Side of Flow
For many of us at RSPro, it’s not just about surf or foil. Some of us ride motos. Some ride bikes. Some free dive or sail. The activity doesn’t matter as much as the feeling: that all-in focus that shuts out the noise and brings you into full alignment with the moment.
And the benefits of hitting that zone? They go way beyond the session:
- Mental clarity that lasts for hours
- Stress reduction through complete presence
- Increased creativity and problem solving
- A deeper sense of purpose and connection to your environment
Flow reminds us what it feels like to be human. To be here. To be enough.
Flow Never Lies
It doesn’t flatter. It doesn’t fake. It shows you where you’re at, every single time. If you’re distracted, you’ll know. If you’re holding tension, you’ll feel it. But when everything lines up — when your board, body, and mind move together — it’s pure magic.
That’s why we build what we build at RSPro. Not just to protect your board or give you grip, but to create products that stay out of the way so you can stay in the zone.
So ride more. Think less. Be here.
And watch Carlos do exactly that in Peru below. No fluff. Just flow.
